After relentless study and considerable experience in Canada and the US, and having married a teacher, Henrietta Outerbridge, in 1953, he made his first appearances at Covent Garden in 1957 in Verdis Un Ballo in Maschera and in the highly acclaimed production of Don Carlos that also marked the theatres centenary a year later. Nevertheless, he became one of the most highly paid tenors and did so without recourse to television chat shows or other gimmicks.
